We Like BOOOOOKS!

There will be NO BOOK CLUB MEETING on Thursday, Oct. 27.

Oct. 24-28 is Conference Week with Early Dismissal (at 12:20) each day.  Keep reading and writing and studying questions.

We're looking at which 10 students will best represent Keheley at the Cobb County Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl on Jan. 21. For each Book Club member, we're keeping track of the number of books read, questions written, questions answered correctly in our competitions, behavior, and attendance.  This will NOT be an easy decision!

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, Nov. 3.

Competition #1!

Book Club Members:  We are planning our FIRST competition using the cool-buzzer-thingies for next Thursday, Oct. 13.  Members who have read and written questions for Anything but Typical and Mockingbird will face off.

If you're currently reading one of these titles, you have time to finish it and get your questions turned in.  If you do, you will be included in this competition.

Writing Questions

Keheley's Book Club is in full swing.  We currently have 45 members!  They're all great kids and it doesn't seem like such an extraordinary number when they're eagerly reading their books.  Keheley Kids do love to read!

As members finish a book, their next assignment is to write 15 questions for that book - 5 from the beginning, 5 from the middle, and 5 from the end.  This is for the purpose of preparing for the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl in January.  We will have practice competitions (using the "cool buzzer thingies") using the questions we generate.

In addition to the questions written by the students, Mrs. Kimbrough, Mrs. Evans, and I have read all of the books and written questions for each of them.  We will add those questions to the student-generated questions and use them as a study guide for students to prepare for the reading bowl.

Book Club Books!

 
Keheley Kids love to read, and they've proven it once again at our first Book Club meeting.  49 eager readers showed up, and many of them brought their parents!  When we got over the initial angst of such a large after-school gathering and decided what we needed to do, we got busy preparing for these enthusiastic readers.

The first thing we needed to do was GET MORE BOOKS!  So we did that.  We're looking forward to this week's meeting when each member will be checking out a Book Club book and starting on a great adventure with the rest of us.  For a complete list of the books we'll be reading, please visit the official Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl website.

All Book Club members will have the goal of completing a book every two weeks.  In addition to reading the books, members will be responsible for writing some good questions for each book.  We use the questions to prepare for the very competitive Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl in January.  I'll be modeling the questioning process for the members at a meeting soon.  For now, the students will concentrate on reading the books.

Book Club!

 The Keheley Book Club is open for all 4^th and 5^th grade students who are good readers and who love to read!  We will have an informational meeting at 2:30 – 3:00 on Thursday, September 1 in the Media Center.  This meeting is for students and parents.  If you are unable to be there for this meeting and your child wants to participate in the Book Club, please fill out the form (sent home with interested students) so we’ll know how your child will be going home that day.  No students unaccompanied by parents will be allowed to stay unless the form is completed and turned in to me.

 On Thursdays following the first meeting, we will meet every week, 2:30 – 3:30.  We will be reading and exploring the 17 chapter books nominated for the Georgia Children’s Book Award.  We will respond to the books, make KNN announcements, write online reviews, and vote for our favorites.  We will have competitions based on the books in preparation for the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl in January.  Ten students from our Book Club will represent Keheley at the competition.

 At the end of each meeting, students will be dismissed to the After School Program (ASP) OR for car pickup.  All students who attend Book Club must have written arrangements for ASP or car pickup.

• All Book Club members must have an ASP form on file.  (Students who are car riders will be placed in ASP after a ten-minute waiting period.)  There is a one-time $10 registration fee and a $7 charge per day to stay in ASP.

 Keheley Kids love to read!  We're looking forward to working with our eager readers on Thursday afternoons!

 “Find a Book, Georgia” is a fun and easy way to select books based on a child’s Lexile* measure and interests. You can use this free search tool to build custom book lists for readers at all reading levels.  Then visit the public library to find the books!

  1. GO TO http://georgia.lexile.com

  2. ENTER the child's Lexile* measure.

       A Lexile measure is included on the CRCT and the GHSGT reports.

  3. SELECT the child's interest categories.

  4. VIEW and refine the search results. 

     As you browse books that the child finds interesting, click the “Find in a Library” button next to the book title to check its availability at your local public library.

     5.  PRINT the child's custom reading list.

 * A Lexile measure is a measure of text complexity only. It does not address the subject matter or text quality, age-appropriateness of the content or a reader’s interests. The Lexile measure is one piece of information that you can use when selecting books.

    * If you don't know your child's Lexile measure, the site has a way to search for a particular book (one you know is on level) and use that measure as a starting point.

The Winners Are....

Isn't modern technology wonderful?  In years past, we had to wait until "sometime in May" to find out which book won the Georgia Children's Book Awards.  Voting just closed on Friday, and we got word of the results on Sunday!  Gotta' love it!

Drumroll, please........................

The winner of the chapter book award goes to The Gollywhopper Games by Jody Feldman.

 

The picture storybook award winner, chosen by the kids in Georgia, is Aliens Are Coming! by Meghan McCarthy.

 

If you haven't read these books, you should!  Children in Georgia can't be wrong - these are great books!  Both of them are available for checkout from Keheley's Media Center.
